PREVIOUS APPLICANTS MUST REAPPLY TO BE CONSIDERED.*** The Mission of the Department of Public Instruction: The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the state’s public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for an Education Program Consultant I (Working Title: Formative Assessment Coach) for our Golden Leaf Schools Initiative.

The Golden LEAF Schools Initiative is a $25 million program funded by the Golden LEAF Foundation with the aim to improve school performance in North Carolina schools through enhancing school culture, leadership, math instruction, pedagogy, and career readiness. Built on the Marzano High Reliability Schools (HRS) model, the initiative provides participating schools with intensive coaching, resources, and support, particularly in rural areas with economic challenges. Twenty middle schools will participate, divided into two cohorts: the Transformative Schools Cohort (TSC), which will receive comprehensive interventions, and the Personalized, Competency-Based Education Cohort (PCBE), focused on instructional transformation. The initiative emphasizes collaboration, aiming to foster long-term educational improvements and workforce development across the state.

The Formative Assessment Coach plays a pivotal role in supporting data-driven instruction within the Golden LEAF Schools of Innovation initiative. This position is responsible for designing and monitoring the implementation of common formative assessments, working closely with school administrators, instructional staff, and the Math Coach to ensure assessments are aligned with the new math curriculum. The Formative Assessment Coach helps establish a consistent process for administering assessments, analyzing results, and enabling teachers to respond effectively to student needs

This is a field-based position which requires extensive travel in the state to provide instruction, leadership, coaching, and collaboration.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

* Demonstrated experience designing, administering, and/or interpreting formative assessments in school or district settings.
* Demonstrated experience in data driven instruction and/or providing hands on coaching teachers and/or instructional staff (examples data discussions and collaborative teacher meetings).
* Demonstrated experience utilizing formative assessment principles, best practices in assessment design, and/or data analysis.
* Demonstrated experience building relationships with teachers, administrators, and/or school leaders.
* Demonstrated experience presenting data insights and/or instructional recommendations to non-technical audiences.

Management Preferences

* Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau) for interpreting and presenting assessment data.
* Prior experience in North Carolina public schools or similar educational settings.
* Knowledge of school improvement models, especially for low-performing or turnaround school contexts.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Master’s degree in the education field to which assigned from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of specifically related experience in public education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
