Introduction
The Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving mental health research and services across Africa. AFRIMEB’s mission is to conduct innovative mental health research that informs both policy and practice, particularly within communities. The organization aims to deliver accessible, affordable, and effective mental health and substance use services, with a special focus on the homeless population in Nairobi, Kenya. This initiative emphasizes community-based solutions and holistic care approaches.
We are looking for qualified Field Enumerators to join our research team. The role involves assisting in the collection of data from individuals experiencing homelessness, and the collected data will directly impact mental health policy and intervention efforts in Kenya.
Key Responsibilities
As a Field Enumerator, you will play a crucial role in supporting the AFRIMEB research team. Your primary duties will involve engaging with the homeless population to gather essential data for mental health research. Key responsibilities include:
- Recruiting Study Participants: Identify and engage individuals from the homeless community in Nairobi to participate in the research study.
- Obtaining Informed Consent: Ensure that participants fully understand the study and give their informed consent before participation.
- Confidentiality: Maintain the privacy of participants and ensure that confidential information is protected at all times.
- Conducting Assessments: Follow the established research protocol to conduct assessments, either manually or electronically, among the homeless population.
- Collaboration with Research Team: Work closely with other research members to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
- Adherence to Study Protocols: Ensure that all study procedures are followed meticulously and that data is collected according to protocol.
- Other Assigned Duties: Assist with any additional tasks as directed by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Skills
Candidates interested in this Field Enumerator position must meet the following qualifications and skills to be considered:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Clinical Medicine, or Social Work from a recognized institution.
- Prior experience in research and data collection, preferably in a healthcare or community research setting.
Key Skills and Competencies:
- Organizational Skills: The ability to stay organized and manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail is crucial.
- Commitment and Availability: Candidates must show a strong commitment to the role, be available for full training, and ensure full participation throughout the research process.
- Resident of Nairobi County: Applicants must reside in Nairobi County and be familiar with the local homeless population.
- Interpersonal Skills: A friendly, customer-first approach is essential when interacting with participants.
- Confidentiality: The ability to maintain strict confidentiality concerning participant information is critical.
- Computer Proficiency: Basic computer skills, especially in data entry and the use of relevant software, are necessary.
Preferred Skills:
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili: Strong communication skills in both written and oral English and Kiswahili are required to engage effectively with participants.
- Team Collaboration: Ability to work well in a team environment, coordinating efforts with colleagues to achieve common goals.
- Self-Driven: Self-motivation is key, along with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Time Management: The ability to meet strict deadlines is essential for completing the research project on time.
- Pressure Management: Candidates should be able to perform under pressure, as data collection activities may sometimes involve tight timelines and challenging conditions.
