Introduction
CIHEB Kenya, an organization dedicated to addressing health challenges in Kenya, is seeking KENPHIA II Interviewers to join our team in conducting a nationwide survey. Job Summary
As a KENPHIA II Interviewer, you will be responsible for conducting interviews in pre-selected households as part of the KENPHIA II (Kenya Population-based HIV Impact Assessment) survey. Reporting directly to the Field Team Lead, your main duties will include administering questionnaires, obtaining informed consent from participants, and ensuring the accurate collection of data. Interviewers will also support the Home-Based Testing Services (HBTS) counselors in designated areas.
The role involves significant travel across Kenya, including rural and urban areas, and requires flexibility in terms of working hours, including weekends and public holidays. Interviewers must ensure confidentiality, accuracy, and compliance with the survey protocol.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend and actively participate in the full KENPHIA II survey training to gain a clear understanding of the survey’s objectives, protocols, and procedures.
- Thoroughly study the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for KENPHIA II to ensure compliance during data collection and interview processes.
- Collaborate with the Field Team Lead to carry out daily survey activities and provide feedback on work progress.
- Visit identified clusters and locate pre-selected households according to the sample design of KENPHIA II.
- Obtain consent, assent, and parental/guardian permission from eligible participants before initiating any interviews using forms pre-programmed on tablets.
- Conduct both household and individual interviews by administering the KENPHIA II questionnaire, ensuring all responses are accurately captured using the tablet-based system.
- Ensure that all interviews are completed as per protocol, and that data collected is complete, accurate, and consistent.
- Validate and re-validate responses and ensure that all collected data is securely transferred to the central server.
- Respond professionally to any concerns or questions raised by household members regarding the survey process.
- Maintain confidentiality and anonymity for all survey participants.
- Provide daily updates to the Field Team Lead regarding the completion of interviews and the status of home-based testing services.
- Schedule call backs for any partially completed interviews and inform the Field Team Lead of the need for follow-ups.
- Ensure the safety and security of all fieldwork materials and equipment.
- Accompany the Field Team Lead to community entry meetings when necessary to explain the survey’s purpose and process.
- Report any unexpected incidents or protocol deviations immediately to the Field Team Lead.
- Assist the HBTS Counselor by supporting participants with counseling, linkage to preferred health facilities, filling out referral forms, and connecting them to appropriate care and prevention services.
- Carry out any additional duties as assigned by the Field Team Lead.
Qualifications and Skills
Minimum Requirements:
- A Diploma in Social Science or a related health field from a recognized institution.
- Fluency in both written and spoken English and Kiswahili, along with proficiency in relevant local languages based on the fieldwork location.
Preferred Qualifications:
- HTS NASCOP certification with valid proficiency testing, especially in HIV testing services, is an added advantage.
- A background in IT and data collection tools such as ODK, KOBO Toolbox, REDCAP, and CSPro will be highly valued.
Experience
- Proven experience in field data collection and/or survey implementation.
- Prior work in HTS (Home-Based Testing Services) in Kenyan health facilities or communities will be an asset.
Competencies
- Comfort in using electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets for data collection.
- Ability to write concise, clear summaries of reports for both internal and external audiences.
- Availability to work full-time during the entire survey period.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to multi-task efficiently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and handle multiple assignments concurrently.
- Adaptability in working under pressure with minimal supervision.

Interviewers must be prepared to handle the physical and mental demands of working in diverse field environments, including possible extended stays away from home. Candidates should be adaptable to working in challenging and unpredictable conditions.
