Introduction

Our Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Nairobi plays a crucial role in providing pre-migration health services for migrants and refugees. We are seeking a dedicated Senior Migration Health Nurse to lead nursing and administrative activities at the MHAC in Kakuma, Kenya. In this position, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing health assessments, administering vaccinations, coordinating pre-departure procedures, and ensuring quality healthcare delivery for migrants. As the Senior Migration Health Nurse, you will directly impact the success of the MHAC’s operations and contribute to a process that transforms lives. This is an onsite role offering hands-on experience in a highly collaborative setting.
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Migration Health Nurse, you will be responsible for a broad scope of tasks to ensure the highest standard of healthcare is delivered at the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC). Your primary duties include:
- Lead Nursing and Administrative Operations
- Oversee daily nursing functions and administrative tasks to fulfill health assessment requirements, which include:
- Conducting medical examinations.
- Coordinating imaging and laboratory testing.
- Administering vaccinations and managing TB treatment.
- Facilitating pre-departure medical movements and counseling.
- Implementing Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) for TB and fitness-to-travel checks.
- Oversee daily nursing functions and administrative tasks to fulfill health assessment requirements, which include:
- Supervise Nursing Staff and Assign Tasks
- Ensure smooth workflow by assigning tasks to Migration Health Nurses.
- Monitor key activities such as pre-examination information sessions, counseling, history taking, and vital signs recording.
- Maintain Quality Assurance and Fraud Prevention
- Implement quality assurance measures to ensure optimal nursing and administrative performance.
- Oversee anti-fraud protocols, particularly regarding testing conducted outside MHAC facilities.
- Optimize Health Assessment Processes
- Contribute to process improvement by establishing efficient workflows and suggesting necessary changes to streamline nursing and clerical operations.
- Uphold Identity Verification Standards
- Verify adherence to identity-check protocols for all migrants and refugees to ensure accurate and secure processing.
- Pharmacy and Medical Supplies Management
- Supervise MHAC pharmacy and medical stock, ensuring all resources are maintained according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Coordinate procurement, including purchase orders, payment requests, and invoices.
- Reporting and Statistical Analysis
- Gather and analyze statistical data to support reporting requirements, collaborating with the Migration Health Nurse Officer as needed.
- Support Medical Escorts and Mobile Missions
- Coordinate and perform medical escort duties when required, ensuring migrants receive uninterrupted care across various stages of migration.
Qualifications and Skills
Education
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution is required.
- A Master’s Degree is advantageous.
- Must possess a valid nursing license in Kenya.
Experience
- At least 5 years of clinical experience for Bachelor’s degree holders, with a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Technical skills in phlebotomy are essential.
- Experience in areas such as Tuberculosis management, mass immunizations, and communicable diseases is preferred.
- Knowledge of clinical nursing practices and principles of preventive care and disease control is crucial.
Managerial Skills
- Demonstrated managerial experience is desirable, particularly in handling teams within healthcare settings.
Technical Skills
- Computer proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access).
