About the Role
The University of Melbourne invites outstanding candidates for a full-time Research Fellow in Particle Physics to join the Experimental Particle Physics Group. This two-year, fixed-term position will be central to Australia’s contribution to the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment—a next-generation water Cherenkov detector located in Japan.
As part of a collaborative effort with Monash University and funded by the Australian Research Council Discovery Project, this position offers the chance to engage in groundbreaking neutrino physics research, international collaboration, and impactful discoveries in one of the world’s leading experimental physics initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct high-impact, internationally competitive research in neutrino physics.
- Lead the calibration and physics analysis efforts for the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment.
- Collaborate closely with researchers from both the University of Melbourne and Monash University.
- Participate in fieldwork and collaboration meetings in Japan.
- Develop machine learning algorithms for particle reconstruction.
- Assist in writing research proposals and securing external funding.
- Disseminate findings through conferences, seminars, and peer-reviewed journals.
Research Focus: Hyper-Kamiokande
The Hyper-Kamiokande is the successor to the Super-Kamiokande detector, boasting a fiducial volume nearly eight times larger. Its enhanced sensitivity will allow scientists to:
- Investigate CP violation in the lepton sector.
- Explore matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe.
- Conduct precise measurements of neutrino oscillations.
- Search for proton decay.
- Detect astrophysical neutrinos from supernovae.
Hyper-Kamiokande is scheduled to become operational in 2028, with Australia playing a pivotal role in its development.
About You: Ideal Candidate Profile
To thrive in this role, you must have a strong background in experimental particle physics, demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and technical contributions to large-scale projects.
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
- PhD in Physics (Experimental Particle Physics, High Energy Physics, or Astroparticle Physics).
- Proven experience in software development for particle physics experiments.
- Experience with data acquisition systems or instrumentation.
- Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- Ability to independently manage research projects and collaborate in teams.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience working with Cherenkov detectors.
- Background in machine learning applications in physics.
- Willingness to travel internationally for collaborative work.
