Your Core Duties and Responsibilities
As a Research Fellow, you will take on diverse and challenging responsibilities that bridge the gap between advanced research and real-world healthcare application:
1. Conduct High-Impact AI Research
- Collaborate with ACAMI’s research teams to advance AI techniques for solving biomedical problems.
- Develop, test, and optimise algorithms that improve healthcare outcomes and operational efficiencies.
- Focus areas may include supervised learning, unsupervised learning, deep learning, federated learning, or reinforcement learning in health.
2. Translational Biomedical Innovation
- Collaborate with clinicians, biologists, and biomedical engineers to scope out health challenges and propose AI-enabled solutions.
- Contribute to design thinking, clinical trial integration, and real-time healthcare analytics.
3. Research Commercialisation and Industry Engagement
- Participate in co-design workshops with biotech and med-tech firms.
- Assist in translating research into prototypes, patents, and publications.
4. Grant Writing and Research Funding Development
- Draft and contribute to high-quality grant proposals for funding bodies including NHMRC, ARC, and international partners.
- Collaborate on contract research opportunities with medical device companies.
5. Team Building and Mentorship
- Support ACAMI’s mission to build high-functioning research teams across multiple faculties.
- Mentor research assistants, PhD candidates, and postgrads working within your project domain.
6. Technology Foresight and Knowledge Sharing
- Stay up to date with AI innovations in biomedical engineering, data privacy, and healthcare analytics.
- Present at international conferences, webinars, and university seminars.
Required Qualifications and Competencies
Minimum Requirements:
- A completed PhD in:
- Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
- Bioinformatics / Computational Biology
- Biomedical Engineering
- Computer Science, or a closely aligned field
Technical Proficiencies:
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, Java, or C++
- Deep experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras
- Familiarity with statistical models, classification algorithms, and neural networks
- Exposure to EHR datasets, genomic databases, or clinical trial data
- Experience in developing reproducible research workflows
Publications and Academic Standing:
- Multiple peer-reviewed papers published in high-impact journals (AI, medical informatics, or computational biology)
- Conference presentations at IEEE, NeurIPS, ICML, MICCAI, ISMB or similar
- Evidence of translating academic research into prototypes or applications
