Job Description: What You’ll Do
Job Summary
The Dean of Students is a student advocate responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight of programs and services that support student development, engagement, wellness, and success. Instrumental in promoting student development as adults and community members, the dean advances institutional goals and strategic priorities. This role oversees key functional areas including Student Engagement & Involvement, Student Conduct, Student Health, Wellness and Counseling Services, and Residence Life & Housing. Additionally, the Dean of Students serves as a liaison and coordinating staff member for Public Safety, chairs the Title IX Central Review Team, and functions as the Title IX liaison with the University’s external support for Title IX. As a member of the Provost Leadership Team, the ideal candidate is a collaborative and student-centered leader with a strong commitment to a holistic student development model that includes co-curricular, extra-curricular, and curricular programming.
Supervisory Responsibilities
* Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff
* Supervises personnel in Student Engagement & Involvement, Residence Life and Housing, Student Health & Wellness, Student Development
* Oversees the daily workflow of direct reports
* Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations and feedback
* Sets yearly goals and initiatives for direct reports
* Manages time off requests for staff
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Engages in unit, division, and university strategic planning efforts and participates in programs and processes intended to improve student support and the student experience. Represents student safety and wellness needs to university leaders and stakeholders.
* Provides direction, intervention, and prevention for students in need, including collaborating with mental health staff, providing student advocacy, and working with staff and students affected by a crisis. Serves in an on-call capacity and identifies and implements interventions in the best interest of students and the university community.
* Provides training and information to students, faculty, staff, parents, and external stakeholders regarding student wellbeing, resources, rights, responsibilities, and overall experience to support student retention and success.
* Acts as Title IX liaison, working with University’s external Title IX support structure to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and institutional policies. Supports the student grievance process and participates as a member of the Title IX Central Review Team, providing training and education, and coordinating resources and relationships with municipal law enforcement and victim advocate groups.
* Administers and oversees the fair and consistent application of the university’s Student Code of Conduct. Facilitates the selection process for membership to the university’s conduct board, trains campus constituents on the student conduct process, conducts periodic reviews of best practices, and oversees ongoing revisions to the process.
* Plans and manages the budget of the Office of Dean of Students
* Plays a leadership role as a member of the University Emergency Management team in response to major crises (Campus Emergencies, student death, and critical incidents) impacting students within the University community.
* Collaborates with Public Safety and on-call personnel on protocols for response to safety, health, or other critical or emergency incidents occurring on campus. Traind and supervises staff in the consistent application and reporting of incident response, and monitors incidents to ensure effective resolution and follow up.
* Serves as chair of the Aggie Care Team, providing student affairs leadership and perspective in partnership with academic affairs for the student concerns committee, which triages and develops intervention strategies for students experiencing difficulty in and out of the classroom.
* Responsible for ongoing development and oversight of the case management function within student affairs to support the success and persistence of students who have difficulties with personal, health, wellness, conduct, safety or their general welfare or life management.
* Serves on committees, task forces, and projects as requested.
* Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
* Effective communication skills and experience with relationship building across administrative constituencies
* Skills and experience in budget management and technology
* Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with a diverse array of students
* Effective communication, training and development skills.
* Experience with crisis intervention and advocacy principles and practices
* Ability to foster a cooperative work environment

* Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops
Education and Experience:
* A minimum of a master’s degree in a relevant field (counseling, student personnel, or higher education) is required.
* Minimum of five (5) years of post-graduate experience in higher education student affairs/student life including experience with student disciplinary protocols
* Working knowledge of federal and state regulations affecting higher education and student life
* Understanding of, and experience with, best practices associated with Title IX is preferred
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
* Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
* Occasionally lifting 25 lbs. or less
* Typically standing or walking
* Required to be on-call and work non-traditional hours when required
